On a board since his youngest age, Nyta\u00ef Aidlin is nowadays the founder of Rookie Slash. Whether he is doing BS Smith on a skateboard, or 360 Melon Grab on a snowboard : Nyta\u00ef believes in the empowering and educative potential of board and outdoor sports. We talked with him about his intentions behind his newly-created association, and his future projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi Nyta\u00ef \u2013 I hope you are doing good. Let's jump right into it, what motivated you to create this project?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Switzerland we have what we call a civil service, which is mandatory (that or a military service). I had the opportunity to do parts of mine in diverse places that host asylum seekers throughout Geneva, including its infamous bunkers. These experiences gave me the space to talk with some of the refugees there. It struck me to see how disconnected they were from Geneva and its inhabitants. So this situation didn\u2019t foster their learning of the language, nor of the culture. On the long term, it can lead to discriminatory practices while encouraging a sense of communitarianism \u2013 which is ultimately problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout my travels, the practice of sports led me to meet locals and positive communities. I shared slacklines with locals in New Zeeland\u2019s\u2019 public parks, riders in diverse skateparks across the Netherlands, I climbed with many people, or even chatted with local mountaineers on the lift! Now back in Switzerland, I noticed that on the one hand the board and outdoor sport community was large and diverse. Yet, the \u2018refugee\u2019 status marginalizes a lot of young people. I thought there was a link to be created there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweet! Did you encounter a lot of challenges in the process of creating this link?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first winter program this year, we had the chance to be supported by the Association L\u00e9manique de Ski et Snowboard Freestyle (ALSF)<\/a>Thanks to their knowledge and coaches, we did some amazing skiing and trampoline sessions! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GVA SK8<\/a> were also really supportive, they provided us with skateboards and all the necessary protective gears!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019Hospice G\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/a> supported the project by spreading the word, and by arranging us buses to go to the mountains. We couldn\u2019t do anything without them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On my side, the biggest part of the work was to coordinate everything \u2013 that was a challenge! In the end it all perfectly worked out. Everyone enjoyed the project, participants and coaches alike! Getting positive feedback from the kids, seeing them going to the skatepark by themselves and making friends there is super gratifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the most difficult part of working with young people?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had some challenges with communication. Some of our participants are learning French, so you have to be patient. But we always found someone to translate from one language to another, which makes for some very funny situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young people are very motivated and respectful, they all learned a lot. Some are super motivated for this summer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the first winter program just finished, how was it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazing! We had a group of 10 young people for the whole winter, we really had fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We organized 3 mountain trips to learn the ropes of skiing and snowboarding. It is super important to understand what is the Swiss culture, outside of our beautiful Geneva. We also had 3 trampoline evenings and muscle strengthening sessions to solidify the team. On top of that, we organized a dozen of skate sessions. Skateboarding is the ultimate way to meet locals. It\u2019s always open, there is the possibility to get free boards at the park, and there\u2019s always someone there to connect with!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would you change any aspect of it if you could?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More outings with more people, in more sports! I would also like to integrate the marginalized Swiss youth into the lessons and trips, but first things first... ahaha<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would say to someone who wants to set up a social project like yours?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don't hesitate! Find motivated people. If you are alone, that\u2019s not a problem \u2013 start organizing, and people will come if the project is cool! Moving forward as a team is really the most important thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set up an action before you start. Be clear about what you want to do, and be realistic. We can't do it all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And most importantly, have fun! Organizing projects has its fair dose of challenges, but it\u2019s also a lot of fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hello Nyta\u00ef, j'esp\u00e8re que tu vas bien. Tout d'abord je me demandais, qu'est-ce qu'il t'a motiv\u00e9 de cr\u00e9er ce projet?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salut! Apr\u00e8s avoir accompli mon service civil dans diff\u00e9rents lieux d\u2019habitation pour requ\u00e9rant d\u2019asile \u00e0 Gen\u00e8ve, dont les bunkers genevois, j'ai eu beaucoup d\u2019occasion de discuter avec les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s sur place. J\u2019ai vu que peu d\u2019entre eux connaissais des Suisses, des Genevois. C\u2019est probl\u00e9matique parce que \u00e7a n\u2019encourage pas l\u2019apprentissage de la langue et de la culture. Au long terme, \u00e7a cr\u00e9\u00e9 des discriminations et encourage le communautarisme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s cela, j\u2019ai eu l\u2019occasion de beaucoup voyager. Partout, le sport m\u2019a permis de rencontrer des locaux et connect\u00e9 avec des communaut\u00e9s positives. J\u2019ai partag\u00e9 des slackline avec les locaux dans des parcs publics n\u00e9o-z\u00e9landais, rencontrer des riders dans les skatepark hollandais, partager des blocs de grimpe avec des gens de tous horizons, ou discuter avec les montagnards du coin sur le t\u00e9l\u00e9si\u00e8ge ! Revenu en Suisse, j\u2019ai constat\u00e9 que, d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, la communaut\u00e9 des sports de glisse et outdoor est \u00e9norme et vari\u00e9, et de l\u2019autre on a des jeunes marginalis\u00e9s par le statut de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9. Il y a un lien \u00e0 cr\u00e9er !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trop chouette! Est-ce que t'as eu des complications lors de la cr\u00e9ation de ce lien?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour le premier programme d\u2019hiver, nous avons eu la chance d\u2019avoir le soutien de Association L\u00e9manique de Ski et Snowboard Freestyle (ALSF)<\/a>. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019expertise de leurs coaches, on a pu faire des sorties de montagnes et de trampoline de fou ! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GVA SK8<\/a> a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement enthousiaste \u00e0 soutenir le projet avec du matos de skate. Big up \u00e0 eux !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019Hospice G\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/a> a soutenu le projet en parlant de l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 \u00e0 ses b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiaires et en pr\u00eatant des bus. On n\u2019aurait rien pu faire sans tous ces gens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le plus gros du travail de mon c\u00f4t\u00e9, \u00e7a \u00e9t\u00e9 de coordonner tout \u00e7a. Et ouais, \u00e7a c\u2019est un super challenge ! Mais au final, tous c\u2019est bien pass\u00e9 \u2013 les organisateurs, les coaches, et les jeunes ont ador\u00e9 le projet. Recevoir le retour positif des jeunes, les voir revenir au skatepark d\u2019eux-m\u00eames et s\u2019y faire des amis, c\u2019est tellement gratifiant !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C'\u00e9tait comment de travailler avec des jeunes?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a eu quelques challenges avec la communication. Certain apprennent le fran\u00e7ais, alors il faut \u00eatre patient. On trouve toujours un jeune pour traduire d\u2019une langue \u00e0 l\u2019autre, \u00e7a donne des situations super dr\u00f4les.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les jeunes sont super motiv\u00e9s et respectueux. Aucun probl\u00e8me ! Ils ont \u00e9norm\u00e9ment appris et certain sont tr\u00e8s motiv\u00e9s pour cet \u00e9t\u00e9 !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le premier programme d'hiver touche \u00e0 sa fin, c'\u00e9tait comment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le feu ! On a recrut\u00e9 une \u00e9quipe de 10 jeunes pour toute la saison, et on s\u2019est vraiment fait plaisir !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a fait 3 sorties montagnes pour apprendre le ski et le snowboard. C\u2019est super important pour comprendre ce qu\u2019est la culture suisse en dehors de notre belle Gen\u00e8ve. On a fait 3 sorties trampolines et des renforcements musculaires pour solidifier l\u2019\u00e9quipe, et plus d\u2019une dizaine de cours de skate. D'ailleurs le skate c\u2019est vraiment le top pour rencontrer des locaux. C\u2019est toujours ouvert, on a des boards pr\u00eat\u00e9 gratos sur place, et y\u2019a toujours du monde \u00e0 rencontrer au skatepark !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus de sorties avec plus de monde, dans plus de sports ! J\u2019aimerai aussi int\u00e9grer des jeunes marginalis\u00e9s suisse dans les cours, mais chaque chose en son temps\u2026 ahaha<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintenant que t'as un peu de recul, quels conseils donnerais-tu \u00e0 quelqu'un qui voudrait se lancer dans la cr\u00e9ation d'un projet social?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il ne faut pas h\u00e9siter ! Trouves du monde pour se motiver avec toi. Si tu es tout.e.x seul, commence \u00e0 organiser et les gens viendront si le projet est cool ! Avancer en \u00e9quipe c\u2019est vraiment le plus important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mets un plan d\u2019action en place avant de commencer. Soit clair sur ce que tu veux faire, et reste r\u00e9aliste. On ne peut pas tout faire en m\u00eame temps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et surtout, trouves-y du plaisir ! Organiser des projets a son lot de difficult\u00e9s mais, surtout, c\u2019est marrant!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
